Operation Covert Swordfish

Jason was always a patient soul, even when his friends were late. I (Ramona) ran late one day to meet him. Our plans had been to meet up, then go to Cafe Zulu, arguably the place with the best swordfish in Laguna, or anywhere, for that matter. Well, we ran so late that we missed our reservation time at Cafe Zulu. Although the food there is great, the husband and wife who run the place, are shall we say, a little bit quirky. In fact, if you have seen the popular Seinfeld episode with "The Soup Nazi," then you will have an idea of the nature of the place. Anyone who dared miss a reservation time, for any reason, was placed on their "Do Not Call Us Again for a Reservation" List. So, poor Jason got "do not called," and it was all my fault. But rather than be mad at me, Jason found this hilarious, and a challenge. It became our new place to go, only I, ironically, had to be the one to give my name and cell number for the reservation. One time he and I did a credit card split, and in between ringing us up, the owner came back and said, "Wait, who was this reservation under?" And I said, "Me, Ramona Rebeck," and the owner said, "Oh, okay, then that's alright, just as long as it isn't Jason Kirshner." I felt so guilty, but Jason was rolling on the floor laughing. He thought it was just too funny. A later time (see picture of July 2010 with Shannon, Jason Z., Ali, Jason, and Ramona, in Laguna) we decided to meet up as a group 1st at a bar on a rooftop in Laguna, and then go on to the Cafe Zulu. We had dinner at the Zulu, laughed all the way through, and then got up to leave. This time I was prepared. I walked towards the owner at the bar, armed with a letter of apology, and $200 in cash (about how much 2 would spend there, thinking back to a reservation for 2 we missed, that got him on do not call, but was my fault, issue with my young son i think). In the letter, along with the cash, I was explaining the situation, asking Jason Kirshner to please be taken off Do Not Call, and to please instead put me, Ramona Rebeck and my cell number, on Do Not Call. But Jason, always hip to what was going on, stopped me in process, and would not hear of it. That would ruin all the fun for next time, he said. We will never, ever replace Jason. He was kind, fun, and always knew how to turn a bad situation into a good one. I will miss my dear friend, always, but try to live the rest of my life in a way that would make him feel happy for me. He just cared, so much, for all of us, who were honored to be made part of his close circle of friends and family.
